Description
Welcome to The Sheffield Cutlery Shop!
A fascinating and highly unusual Coachman’s knife, dating to approximately 1890, incorporating a remarkable selection of tools designed for the practical demands of the coachman and horse-drawn carriage era.
The knife features nickel silver scales and carbon steel blades, with an impressive array of specialist implements including:
- Spearpoint blade
- Button hook
- Small spearpoint blade
- Screws
- File / screwdriver
- Hook picker
- Spike implement
The Knife weighs 242 grammes, and measures 25 cm when fully opened.
The combination of blades and implements makes this considerably more interesting than a conventional pocket knife. These knives were designed as practical working tools, allowing a coachman to carry a number of useful implements in a single compact object while travelling and working with horses, harness and carriages.
The nickel silver scales are particularly attractive and give the knife a distinctive period appearance, while the carbon steel blades and specialist tools reflect its original utilitarian purpose.
A wonderful piece of Victorian equestrian and motoring history, offering a fascinating insight into the equipment carried by working coachmen around the end of the 19th century. Its unusual configuration and range of implements make it an especially interesting piece for collectors of antique knives, Victorian tools, equestrian antiques and early multi-tools.
A genuinely unusual and collectible Victorian piece, with both historical interest and considerable character.
Our work is our passion, we only provide quality products and services. This is a wonderful knife that will only increase in value over time.
