An elegant vintage French carving set comprising a carving knife and matching fork, presented in its original fitted case.
The inside of the case is marked:
“Orfèvrerie Jouffroy – Vincent Scotto – 39 Rue de la Palud – Marseille”
This identifies the prestigious Marseille silverware retailer that originally sold the set. Rue de la Palud has long been one of Marseille’s principal shopping streets, and it was common for French retailers to commission or sell high-quality cutlery made by specialist manufacturers.
The carving knife is engraved:
“Acier Forgé P.V. Garanti”
indicating a forged steel blade, while the bolster carries a small “V” maker’s stamp. The set was most likely manufactured by a French cutlery maker, probably in the renowned Thiers cutlery region, before being retailed by Jouffroy in Marseille.
The handles are silver-plated, giving the set an attractive, classic appearance suitable for both display and use.
Based on the style, materials, and markings, the set is believed to date from approximately the 1940s to 1950s.
A wonderful piece of French tableware, ideal for collectors of vintage cutlery, French silverware, or mid-century dining accessories, and equally suitable as a practical carving set with period charm.
